Hi there! Any further news/photos on the kubelwagen project? Fascinating report so far, can't wait to see things like: 1) how you tackle the doors (central post? central hinges? 2cv hinges and catches?) 2) do you add the "back-rail" behind the front seats? 3) how you fabricate the fold-down windscreen? 4) the overall "stance" on 2cv wheels. In general, this is exactly what I've been thinking about for some time (but unlike you, haven't dared get around to starting) for a future mock re-enactment mission. Can't say more, except a key element is the post/pintle for a centrally mounted Karcher dressed up as an MG 34/42 mit boot-mounted generator and water tank.... You've cracked several problems I think about, such as the air filter height - I was going to lay a cut-out spare tyre on the bonnet, with a panel on top, and keep the real spare in the boot! Love the 2cv headlights, and hope you use 2cv handles etc to emphasise it's parentage - I'm sure it'll look just like a kubel coming towards you till you see the "whites of it's eyes" - then it's too late! Keep up the cracking good work - it's an inspiration to us all!

The latest work to the Kubel. Made the twin exhaust system front to rear.

The exhaust was made to give it a more authentic vw type sound.
The front pipe had to be specially made to allow for the fitting of the alternator because with the original front pipe there was no room for it.

I am always amazed to see how people can work steel like modeling plasticine (not sure of the term). It seems to me that doing such a work would simply be impossible to me even if I had a second or third life ! Great work and great talent !

Hello Captain, thanks bud. The suspension will be a little higher as yet so ground clearance wont be too much of a problem, but im thinking about fitting an aluminium exhaust shield underneath to stop it getting hit by anything. Very Happy Cool

Fitted the engine cover as well. It will have to have air vent slots cut in as yet.

This shows the new front pipe and the re-fitted heat exchanger to the side of it.

Hi there! Great to see more progress on the kubel - great front profile. You could disguise the air vents with a hanging tow rope. Or the number plate. Can't wait to see your plans for the hingeing/catches of the doors and the "seat back" cross-tube, as well as the folding windscreen (2cv?). Keep up the magnificent work!

Hey,

I think you said that you want to paint it on some camo colors.

I hope you change your mind.. Shape of those cars are so unique,
sharp and interesting that in just one color your work would look
absolutely best. It would be shame to cover it with messy camo spray
paint, I think those original examples look quite lame. As Germany did
have good designers on products and propacanda graphics.. I think
those camo paints were not drawn in their table.

It would be so stylish as sand color Very Happy

you've probebly allready seen this
but there are good detail pics in this
special for the doors and the bar between them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXI2rQVTyrA

and for the camo, there are many differend types for the kubel avaleble
every platoon seems to have had there own coloring
brown was common for afrika
green for green hills and flatlands
camo for ardennen and black forrest
greyish blue for the hoolywood movies
dark green (and this is strange) with shiny polish for staff cars

and then everybody gave it there own custumizing Wink
just like the americans did to the willys

Point taken Olli and to a degree i think you are right although im afraid for many years now i have been in love with the three colour camo pattern used in the Normandie invasion so i think it will probably be those that i choose.
The only other colour i would consider would be the very early Field Gray or Luftwaffe Dark blue/gray.
Not quite ready for paint yet but will have to make my mind up soon.

Thanks for the link Brammie. Yeah i have seen it before and its great to watch and full of helpful detail. Cool

These are my colour options taken from three of my models.

Hi Tony,
Agree with you about the Normandy Camo - and it's very nature will totally disguise any scale or finish imperfections. Plus like you we are D-Day afficionados.
Sorry, Brammie, but we doubt very much whether ANY German staff cars would have had Polish drivers, shiny or not.....
Here in France all door hinges are simple single peg drop-on, lift-off type. Could suit your doors beautifully.
Keep up the great work!
