How come max?
my local 2cv specialist imported an H van from francis during the summer, went over with a mate, bought the van and paid for a one way ticket home on le ferry. Insured it on the chassis number, mot'd it, then booked it in at the local DVLA office for them to check it out, they then issued him with an age related plate. All he had document wise was the carte gris (V5C), he's registered a ripple with no french docs at all!
think it costs 60 odd quid to get registered, plus the cost of the tax on top of that assuming it aint tax exempt _________________ www.international2cvfriends.com |

Its dead easy Max, pretty much what Neil has said above, be careful with french ebay though, compared to the UK france is a huge country, dont buy a van from south of Paris i would say (unless you plan to have a long holiday whilst getting it) otherwise you are looking at more than a day trip and after this the ferries get more expensive. to register it here you will need it insured (most specialist places like Footman James will do it) on the chassis number, you need an MOT and you will need the french version of the V5 'logbook' which is the carte gris. also, DO NOT take it for granted in any way, shape or form that any French vehicle with the French version of an MOT ( a C.T.or controle technique) is likely to get through a British MOT, they are two quite different tests and the French one much more lenient and much less frequent (every two years i think, unless the vehicle has a carte gris collection, where i understand it doesnt have to be tested at all? im sure a French native will clear this up!)
From what Ive been told by somebody who has imported a few vehicles (an ami6, an H and an AKS400) the DVLA like to screw you about a bit so its best to take any paperwork you can get hold of to get it registered.
as for actually buying it, make sure you understand the language barriers or get somebody who does, just for basic stuff like haggling and you might want to know things about the van your looking at that they can tell you. buying is simple, find one on Ebay or anciennes.net (where my ami came from) and make sure you can collect within the timescale the seller is happy with, and get your arse out there to get it.
Might be worth speaking to Annie and Wiltz as they imported that Acad earlier this year and unlike me they actually bothered to register it, so they can tell you more in detail about that side of things.
If i can get a weekend off from woman/child ill come out and pick it up with you and you can crash here. _________________
