Can anyone tell me where to find more info on Simca flathead V8's?
A friend of mine has bought one for his C4F hotrod project but we can't find any info on it. A workshop manual or website or club address would be great. Here's the info on the engine:
Simca V8 flathead, from an S.U.M.B. (Simca army vehicle)
type: F6CWM,
blocknumber: 1020826,
built in Molsheim,Fr.
Date on engine says 12-3-1962, but on the heads itīs '61.
Itīs not the 2,3 Vedette engine by the way, this is something like 4.2 litre.
Any info would be appreciated! _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

I'm sure the HAMB will help you out.
It's not like they don't use/tune/race them in the USA...

Thanks for the info, guys.
The guy who had this engine for sale runs a small hotrod shop here in Holland. He had a few more for sale, stripped from these Marmon vehicles.
He used at least one to power one of his own hotrods but did not seem to have technical info on it. He gave some head gaskets with it so we will open the engine up and check the insides before making it run. It turns very smoothly (by hand) so there shouldn't be too many issues there. But better safe than sorry.
The electrical system has to be converted from 24 to 12V. Is there a starter that fits this engine in 12V? (I'm not that good at reading french).
A rear axle is also needed. There is a 4 speed gearbox with the engine (from the Marmon) to get the final gear ratios into normal range, we have to figure out the gear ratios to match that and get a decent top speed.
Here's the body of the C4F:
And here's the engine:

There is no shortage on info on Merc and Ford flatheads. We have plenty supplier addresses and books, mags etc. in our own library but we needed to be sure where the differences lay between Simca/Marmon and the US ones. The link Lionel provided is very helpful in that area.
Thanks again, guys! _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

What I will now say again for the third time is that on the HAMB you should be able to have info for french flatheads too... _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

Oh ok. I didn't understand that. I guess you wouldn't piss me off like that if you weren't right... I'll have a look-see. _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Bart remember that in those days french car companies used chevy v8 engines, direct from the usa, for example Facel. So I think normal US parts will be the same. _________________ 2CV, with Visa turbo charged |

I've been doing some reading on the HAMB (thanks to Jozef, who finally got through my thick skull) and it seems that the French took the best aspects from two types of flathead v8 and combined them in one new engine. They made their own castings and they are supposedly much better quality than the US ones. All the bolt on goodies from the US seem to fit, though. Only the outside thread of the exhaust manifold studs are metric, the rest is in inches.
@ Panthershaun: My friend bought a good quality complete block with 4speed tranny for 1300 euros. Maybe in England you can get them cheaper. There seem to be some guys who bought them in large quantities from the french army when those SUMB vehicles became obsolete (early 90's).
My friend is really into Citroen and was determined to build a rod without using US parts. I guess he has done well so far. _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Cheers Bart. I will have to keep looking.
There is something about the amount of head studs which can determine how much speed equipment is available. Not to sure if its 21 or 24 that can get all the equipment, but I will check it out for you. _________________ In-the-Shed Speed Shop. |
