I've been longing for a van for a while and at the weekend my wish came true!
Although the bulkhead is stamped AK-B it's been dated by Citroen to 1969. She has the higher compression M4 602 unit from the Ami 6.
My aim is to give her a good clean and shine, waxoyl everywhere, get the engine running and electrics working. After that I'll see what the MOT man says is a requirement to use her, because I want to use her LOTS!
A few photos:
I have a spare M4 and a spare M28 so towards the end of this year I'm thinking of building a hybrid as a winter project. Has anyone tried this?

hi
nice van
on my AMI6 i used the engine case crank camshaft and hi comp pistons and liners from an AMI8 (AM2) and fitted the heads and manifold + solex 40 carb from an M4
adapted the M4 air covers onto it and thats about it.
Works perfectly well. _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

I would like to do something like this, but maybe use block from M28 so I have an oil filter?
Bjorn, it's not that bad. I will paint it soon. |

I gave her a quick run last weekend - oil pouring out of the forward push rod seal on the right hand side.
With this van is everything seems willing to be undone - manifold nuts (and two bolts) all came out great. No problems with the barrel either. Manifold is making some rattly noises, so its probably rusting merrily inside, but I'll worry about that another time.
The cowling was a bit of a pain, but it came of ok.
New seals installed.
I've used later 'spectacle' type seals with the little notches and corresponding metal caps - apparently the rubber is better? Anyway theyre not leaking which is the main thing.
New manifold gaskets.
Put it all back together and she's running beautifully! M4 has a lovely sound!
What shall I do with these? I could lacquer them as they are and preserve the 'aged' look but these panels are rare and I'd like to preserve them as best as possible. Sandblasting may damage them, what about soda blasting?

Yeah, oil filter and better camshaft, you could use a M28 and get Perfect Circle 9:1 compression cylinders and pistons and you'd have the same as me.
Oh, final word of advice : when using M4 heads, you need to reuse the M4 pushrod tubes o-Ring gaskets, because the M4 tubes are 0.5mm smaller in diameter than on modern heads.
Using new type of gaskets will lead to leaks (and big ones, too), don't ask, I learnt the hard way _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

Something about sodablast. It doesn't get rust away, and may stretch thin panels. Learned by the hard way... _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |

I think I will use rust removing gel on a sunny day and then sand them by hand. |

They don't look that bad at all
use one of these lightly and it will get the panels clean to bare or rust free metal quite easily.
and put some rust inhibitor straight after you've finished. _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

Yesterday I bought some U-Pol Acid 8 which I will over coat with zinc primer before applying a top coat of colour.
I need to have some AC133 Kandahar mixed up or maybe a contrasting colour? |

Keep it in the same colour. 2 tone 2cvs are easily transformed into circus cars. You can't go wrong with a monochrome paintjob. _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

This weekend I have mainly been rust sorting:
Off side B pillar before:
Attacked it with a wire brush and my Dremel to reveal holes
Took it back to bare metal
And did the base of the A pillar as well to reveal more holes
Got some Kurust on them
Then Etch primer (U-Pol Acid 8 - great stuff!)
Then zinc primer
After that had dried over night, this morning I filled the holes, let it go off and finished with another coat of zinc primer.
Job done :)
I also sorted similar problems on the near side.
Before:
During:
After:
I also sorted the back panel out:
and
You can see in that picture we trial fitted the rear panels too
Next came the front bulkhead. "Rust staining from where inner dash shelf renewed" hmmm
Took a wire brush to it
Kursuted it
An hour or so later
And top coat of zinc spray, but didnt take a photograph More on the bulkhead next week. Wait and see
So what about that "rust staining"? Well when a wise man says leave it alone do as they say - take note James Wallace if you go looking for problems on a 2cv you'll find them!!!
Under the parcel shelf trim lay this:
Right of dash
Left of dash
So out with the wire brush:
Yes those are holes
And after much scrubbing and sanding some more kurust
This will be followed later this week by more zinc primer. I've thrown the soundproofing away, but kept the vinyl to use as a template. I'll buy some nice black or grey carpet and line the parcel shelf and dash area. It just beats me how it got so bad, I've never seen such a rusty parcel shelf apart from on cars that have been left in gardens!
I also attacked the interior of the roof with my wire brush, sand paper, kurust and etch/zinc primer:
It's not a very good pic, the darker areas are where there's zinc primer on the etch primer. I'm going to get some metal paint this week and will give it a nice (probably grey) over coat.
Goodness - It's only when you look at the pictures that you realise how much you can achieve in 3 days! |
