When i build my chop top 2cv, I want it to be loud and brash, Ive seen 2cv cross and I want exhausts like they have, straight out the side of the bonnet, surely this loses power though? why are they done like this? _________________

They probably don't know any better, although I'd be surprised, or they do it becaus it is the lightest option....

Russ,
you can achieve much the same effect by sawing the lower half off a Rosi crossbox, or having it fall off as happened with the ECAS/Dalton car one year at Mondello with some hours still to go until the end of the race.
Since the short primary pipes were pointing directly at the tarmac and reflected straight back up, the noise was ear-splitting as it passed the pit lane and almost as bad inside the car, even through a race helmet.
If I recall correctly, this was costing around a second a lap compared to the times before the exhaust disintegrated, but Roy and Jules (the team manager) worked out that it was a better bet to keep going rather than lose time coming in to change the crossbox.
Good call, as they won ( again) ...
Ken
( It's worth remembering that a well designed exhaust doesn't necessarily have to be loud. One of the more successful competitors in the old days of 2CV racing, Royce Grey, ran a crossbox setup with a centrally exiting secondary pipe, running all the way to the back of the car. That was quick and 'very' quiet.)
