could be... when I change gear from second to third, sometimes it needs a bit more power to get it in gear...
but the noise I heard from the gearbox is in all the gears _________________ @ 1986 2CV6 Spécial Pick Up |

there is no bearing between 2' and 3' gear. the reason for difficult changing between gears is usually worn or broken synchrone rings:
these rings hold synchrone at a certain distance, so when you start pushing gear lever, you move certain gear towards this ring, synchrone is pressed against it and by friction it causes pairs of gears to start turning with equal speeds, thus allowing them to come one into another. when this ring worns out, it increases in diameter, so that gears are harder to push over it. or, when it breaks, synchrone cannot function because there is too much space on the axis and the friction cannot occur, so that gears 'crack' when shifting.
(uff I made it complicated. the picture is worth a thousand words)
when gearbox has the same noise in all gears, it's differential that causes trouble. if it has different noise in different gears, it's usually the primary shaft bearing (at the end of the upper axle - behind the lid at the back of the gearbox, where speedo cable comes in). original citroen bearing is expensive, but SKF makes one almost identical, which costs around 10 euros and any machinist shop can adjust it to suit 2cv gearbox. |

Quote: | Maybe the bearing between gear 2 and 3. | No bearings of the main gearbox shafts are ball bearings. The diff bearings on the otherhand are cone/tun bearings, so I suppose this these pieces come from the diff.
Cheers and good luck with the repair, Bart |

It´s a needle bearing and yes there is, number 25 on the list. If you split the shaft of second and third gear it´s located inside this shaft. This bearing is fitted with teflon grease, because it never gets enough oil. Therefor it´s a weak spot. If this bearings is broken the shaft will bend a little bit, therefor making gearchange more difficult.
Also needle bearing from diff aren´t they a bit thicker then 2mm? _________________ 2CV, with Visa turbo charged |

Okay, yes you could be quite right I didn't consider those bearings. |

you're right, needles from diff bearing are thicker than 2mm, but the ones from small primary shaft bearing are much more elongated in respect to thickness, so it's not that either. plus, this small bearing is 'locked' inside the shaft coming from the clutch, so to me it seems unlikely that the needles could escape from there.
however, it could be this:

That´s also an option, maybe that´s why the gearbox is still working And indeed I took al look at the pics and if the needles from the bearing I was talking about would come out, the complete gearbox should be broken
The bearing you mention, shouldn´t be difficult to change. _________________ 2CV, with Visa turbo charged |
